Mark Fewer to host CBC Radio 2’s This is My Music

Listen in to CBC Radio 2’s This is My Music on Saturday, September 17 at 10am for a 2-hour musical journey hosted by violinist Mark Fewer. The broadcast date will coincide with Owen Sound’s SweetWater Music Festival, where Fewer is Artistic Director. A superbly versitile artist whose recent and upcoming concerts include world premieres, Early Music, jazz and many genres in between, Mark’s most recent recording features the arresting music of American composer and self-designated “Bad Boy of Music”, George Antheil. The recording, which features the world premiere of the composer’s Sonata for Violin Solo earned high praise from The Buffalo News: “Bravo isn’t enough … Try a good lusty Bravissimo for this disc, one of the most welcome classical discs of the year.”

Cellist Matt Haimovitz on the cover of McGill News

Coming off an extraordinary season which included a Grammy nomination along with raves from the jazz media for Meeting of the Spirits, a new recording with his all-cello ensemble Uccello, Matt Haimovitz is featured on the cover of McGill’s quarterly magazine. This year the adverturous cellist (and McGill prof) also released Matteo, a 300th birthday tribute to his beloved Matteo Gofriller cello, which Gramophone Magazine called “a Fabergé egg of musical delights.” Upcoming projects include a world premiere cello concert by Philip Glass and a tour and new recording with pianist Christopher O’Riley.

Rappahannock County to be performed in Richmond and Austin in September

After a stunning premiere at the Virginia Arts Festival last spring, Rappahannock County, a new music theatre work by acclaimed composer Ricky Ian Gordon and librettist Mark Campbell, commissioned to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the start of the American Civil War, will be heard in two additional cities this fall.  Inspired by personal accounts of those who experienced the Civil War first-hand, Rappahannock County will be performed at the Modlin Center in Richmond, Virginia, September 9-16, and at Texas Performing Arts in Austin from September 18-25. (SGPR was delighted to work with GSI Artists on this breathtaking premiere!)
